She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and attended Hotchkiss School, a private boarding school in Connecticut.

After graduating from high school, she attended Princeton University, where she majored in English.

After graduating from college, MacKenzie Scott worked as a research assistant for Toni Morrison, the Nobel Prize-winning author.

She then went on to work at a hedge fund, where she met Jeff Bezos, who was also working there.

The two got married in 1993 and moved to Seattle, where Bezos founded Amazon.

While Jeff Bezos was busy building Amazon, MacKenzie Scott pursued her own career as a writer.

She published her first novel, “The Testing of Luther Albright,” in 2005, which won the American Book Award. She went on to publish her second novel, “Traps,” in 2013.

After her divorce from Jeff Bezos in 2019, MacKenzie Scott received a 4% stake in Amazon, which was worth approximately $36 billion at the time.

She became one of the wealthiest women in the world overnight. However, rather than holding onto her wealth, she decided to give it away.

In July 2020, MacKenzie Scott announced that she had given away $1.7 billion to 116 organizations that focused on areas such as racial equity, LGBTQ+ rights, and climate change.

She said that she chose these organizations based on a rigorous evaluation process and that she hoped her gifts would be “a signal of trust and encouragement” for the organizations.

Since then, MacKenzie Scott has continued to give away her wealth. In December 2020, she announced that she had given away another $4.2 billion to 384 organizations across the United States.

She said that she was “far from completing” her giving and that she planned to continue to give away her wealth “until the safe is empty.”

MacKenzie Scott has four children with Jeff Bezos. After their divorce, she changed her name from MacKenzie Bezos to MacKenzie Scott.

She has kept a low profile and has rarely given interviews.

However, in a Medium post in 2019, she talked about her decision to give away her wealth and said that she wanted to “de-emphasize privilege” and “amplify voices the world needs to hear.”
