MckourageKevin Jerome Gilyard better known as Kevin Gates, is an American rapper,singer and entrepreneur born February 5, 1986. Gates was born to a Puerto Rican mother and an African American father.
Gates began his career in 2007 by signing a local label Dead Game Records. His career bloomed along with Baton Rouge natives and Boosie Badazz and Webbie in the mid-2000s. The three collaborated on Gates’ first mixtape, Pick of Da Litter,in 2007. Another mixtape, All or Nuthin, was released in 2008 and featured what Gates described as ‘alot of pain…a lot of true stories. Gates music career paused between 2008 and 2011. He spent 31 months in prison. During his time in prison ,Gates claimed he studied psychology through a prison program. He was released early from prison for good behavior.
After his term in prison, Kevin began working on music again. He earned some buzz with the mixtape, Make ‘Em Believe in 2012. Later that same year he caught the attention of Lil Wayne’s record label, Young Money Entertainment. He noted that Birdman gave him the idea to start his own record label, Bread Winner’s Association.
In 2013 he released the mixtape, The Luca Brasil Story which received critical praise. In May 2014, Kevin was named a member of XXL ‘s Freshman Class. In August 2014, Gates introduced the creation of a new energy drink called ”I Don’t Get Tired. The drink is based on Gates’ 2014. Gates earned his third Billboard 200 listing in a row with the release of his 13th mixtape, Luca Brasil 2.
In May 2015, Gates released another mixtape, Murder for Hire. In July 2015, he released the song ” Kno One”.
