Barbara Angell was Australia’s first female television comedy writer-entertainer. She was born on March 6, 1935, and was also known as Barb Angell and Angela Barr.

Sometimes, she was incorrectly credited as Barbara Angel. She received her education at Presbyterian Ladies’ College. She was born in Melbourne.

She got her start in the acting world working at Melbourne’s Little Theatre (later renamed St. Martins) under the direction of Brett Randall and Irene Mitchell, for whom she made her debut in their production of The Guinea Pig in 1955.

From 1955 through 1958, she was a dancer and comedian with the Tivoli Circuit, and she also appeared in comedy sketches. She appeared in Melbourne’s first television variety show, which was a live weekly program called Tivoli Party Time (1956–197),


as a member of the nuclear cast that also included Buster Fiddess, Iris Shand (wife of actor Ron Shand), and Don Williams. The show aired between 1956 and 1957. She authored all of the comedic material that was performed in this presentation.
