How Many Super Bowls did Barry Switzer win?

He led the Cowboys to victory in Super Bowl XXX over the Pittsburgh Steelers and won three national championships while playing for Oklahoma. He is one of just three head coaches to have won both a college football national title and a Super Bowl, the others being Jimmy Johnson and Pete Carroll, and he has one of the highest winning percentages of any college football coach in history.

Switzer was born on October 5, 1937, to Frank Mays Switzer and Mary Louise Switzer in Crossett, Arkansas. Early in February 1954, the Arkansas Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission and the Arkansas State Police conducted a raid on Barry and his younger brother Donnie’s house in rural Ashley County, Arkansas, where they were living with their mother and father. Untaxed illegal alcohol was uncovered by the State Police and Commission at the residence.

Frank was released on bail but was later found guilty of trafficking alcohol illegally for the intention of reselling (“bootlegging”). He was given a five-year prison sentence, but the conviction was overturned on appeal. Frank did serve that term for five months, so he was unable to watch Barry play high school football in his last year.

On August 26, 1959, their mother shot herself on the back porch with a.38 caliber revolver while Barry and his brother Donnie were present at home. Barry and his brother started their professional careers before their father was killed on November 16, 1972, by a jealous lover.

Barry joined Pi Kappa Alpha while playing football at the University of Arkansas on an athletic scholarship he accepted.

He served as one of the Razorbacks’ “Tri-Captains” during his senior year of 1959, helping the team to a 9-2 record, a share of the Southwest Conference championship, a victory over Georgia Tech in the 1960 Gator Bowl, and a final poll ranking of No. 9 all during head coach Frank Broyles’ second season in that position. After graduating, he served a brief time in the U.S. Army before returning to Arkansas to work as Broyles’ assistant coach.

Why Was Switzer Fired?

Switzer referred to Bosworth’s assertions at the time as sensationalism. After five of Switzer’s players were accused of felonies earlier this year, the biggest newspapers in the state demanded that he step down. In a gunshot that occurred in a hostel, one player was accused of injuring another player.

What Happened to Barry Switzer?

1989 saw his resignation as a coach. The Dallas Cowboys of the NFL hired Switzer as their head coach in 1994, and two years later they won the Super Bowl. He left his position in 1997, having amassed a 40-24 record. Since then, he has been inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame and is now active in a number of small businesses in Oklahoma.

After a loaded.38-caliber revolver was discovered in Switzer’s luggage at the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport in August 1997, he was taken into custody. There were kids at Switzer’s Dallas home, so he slipped the rifle in his suitcase to hide it from them as he made his way back to the team’s training camp complex in Austin.

He claimed that before leaving for the airport, he unintentionally failed to take the gun out of the luggage. Switzer entered a guilty plea, received a $3,500 fine, and was given a year of delayed judgment. Jones imposed a $75,000 fine on him two days later (equivalent to $126,601 in 2021). Switzer, who had a 40-24 career NFL coaching record, left his position as Cowboys head coach following a poor 6-10 year in 1997.
