A man invaded a medical facility in Minnesota, killing one person and wounding four others, he faces a mandatory life sentence without the possibility of parole when he is sentenced on Friday.
Gregory Ulrich opened fire at the Allina Crossroads Clinic in Buffalo, Minnesota, on Feb. 9, 2021, killing 16 people. Buffalo is located 40 miles (65 kilometers) northwest of Minneapolis.
Ulrich was found guilty of all 11 counts against him by a jury earlier this month, including premeditated first-degree murder in the killing of Lindsay Overbay, a 37-year-old medical assistant.
Four other clinic employees made it out alive, albeit with critical injuries.
Ulrich, 68, acknowledged buying the rifle, assembling pipe bombs, and carrying out the assault during his trial.
He said, however, that he was motivated by agonizing agony that he claimed the medical staff at Allina failed to adequately handle and that he had no intention of killing anybody.
Prosecutors said Ulrich was aware of what he was doing on that particular day.
They viewed a pair of smartphone recordings that Ulrich filmed a few months before the incident, in which he urged that if pain medicine was turned off, elderly folks should collect their pistols and go down to their clinics and murder as many nurses as possible.
Ulrich was known to law police, who said he was enraged at his medical care following the assault.
During the trial, one witness claimed that she overheard the shooter dial 911 and instruct the dispatcher to “Send a large number of ambulances. There are several spinal injuries, and I have explosives poised to detonate.”
