McCombs became panicked, submerged, and never surfaced, according to troopers. He was retrieved from the river by rescue teams and pronounced dead at the spot about an hour later.

According to police, McCombs was wanted for first-degree murder in two separate homicide cases in Tampa.

McCombs allegedly planned with another suspect, Taymel Jackson, to murder Christopher Watson on Nov. 1, 2021, according to Tampa police. Watson’s body was discovered shot to death in 22nd Street Park. US Marshals had taken Jackson into custody.

McCombs was also a suspect in a second murder on Jan. 3, 2022, in the Riviera Apartments, according to investigators. A 20-year-old guy was found shot to death next to a bullet-riddled silver Nissan Altima, according to police.

Xavier Felton, a passenger in the suspect vehicle, was arrested for first-degree murder in March. McCombs is thought to have been driving the car at the time of the incident, according to Tampa police.
