She was the first female Comptroller of New York City and the first female District Attorney of Kings County. Holtzman was the Democratic contender for the United States Senate in 1980, but he lost to Republican nominee Al D’Amato.
Holtzman is the daughter of attorney Sidney Holtzman and college professor Filia (Ravitz) Holtzman and was born in Brooklyn, New York. She is descended from a Jewish family.
In 1958, she graduated from Abraham Lincoln High School in Brooklyn. Holtzman and her twin brother, Robert, ran for student government together in high school. Elizabeth was chosen vice president, while Robert was elected president.
Holtzman received her bachelor’s degree from Harvard University’s Radcliffe College (magna cum laude, Phi Beta Kappa, 1962) and her law degree from Harvard Law School (1965), where she was one of just 15 women in a class of over 500 males.
She was a member of the SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee), helped in the formation of the Legal Students’ Civil Rights Research Council, taught English at Harvard College, and worked as a law clerk for civil rights attorney C. B. King while at Harvard Law.
